AUBURNDALE | Ben Adams, owner of Adams Cold Storage, received the Auburndale Chamber's 2013 Business of the Year award at its annual luncheon Thursday.

"This is a great asset to Auburndale," said Chamber President Angie Hunter. "Our youth leadership group took a tour of the plant. ACS really gave them the ‘cold' shoulder."

The business, established in 2010, provides cold food storage and caters to food processors, manufacturers, grocers, distributors and import/export brokers.

"I appreciate this. It was unexpected," Adams said. "We're growing, and this award will be well-received."

He said, after the luncheon, that business is good and he plans an expansion after the election.

"We started with nothing and now we're running 100 to 120 percent full with 38 employees," he said. "We're not in the city limits yet, but when we get there, I'll annex into the city. Auburndale understands and embraces industry."

It has a federal contract to store and deliver food in 30 counties in Florida for the National School Lunch Program and stores refrigerated bakery and other items for a grocery store chain. Storing citrus is 20 percent of the company's business.

The 200,000-square-foot warehouse was built as a complete masonry freezer with five adjacent rooms, including enclosed chilled docks for loading and unloading. Individual temperature ranges from -5 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

"We do a lot of laughing here, but we also work hard," he said. "This award is about the people I got, not me. You're as good as the people you have.

Adams wasn't the only organization honored Thursday.

The Auburndale Chamber of Commerce recognized Hampton Education Foundation Inc. with its 2013 President's Awards.

Helping high school students through mentoring and scholarships is the purpose of the Hampton Education Foundation, a nonprofit group of retirees who live in the Hampton community and are dedicated to helping students achieve their full potential.

"They started in 2008 by giving two $2,000 scholarships to high school students wanting to further their education," said Hunter. "Now, they've given 27 area students $2,000 scholarships."

Kevin Dunn spoke on behalf of the group, saying it was great to be recognized.

"The kids are so deserving," Dunn said. "But they receive more mentorship than money. We treat them like grandchildren and they treat us like grandparents. It's phenomenal."

Beverly Mercer Scott, the Baynard House's tour guide, was named the Chamber's 2013 Citizen of the Year.

Hunter apologized in advance for telling Scott a little lie.

"They did lie to me," Scott said. "They told me I was supposed to be here to talk about the Baynard House."

The Baynard House is a Victorian House Museum that Auburndale High School students and other community volunteers restored in 1992.

"I give tours there," Scott said. "They have my phone number at Parks and Rec. I just love to talk about Auburndale and its history."
